Supporting Local Business During the Sales Tax Holiday

This weekend, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts will hold its 10th Sales Tax Holiday. On Saturday, August 15th and Sunday, August 16th Bay State consumers will be able to purchase retail items, up to $2,500, without a sales tax.

Massachusetts Governor, Charlie Baker, stated that the sales tax holiday is beneficial for both consumers and small businesses. He stated that the brief break consumers get from the sales tax also stimulates city and town economies across the state.

Throwback Thursday: Saugus Iron Works

You may not know this, but Saugus, Massachusetts is home to the nation’s oldest iron works. In 1645, Richard Leader sailed from England and set up shop on the Saugus River and one year later opened for business. The iron works created horseshoes, saw blades, nails, wagon wheels, other tools, and was considered to be state of the art (for the mid 17th century). However, despite success and acclaim it was forced to close in 1670 and was lost as nature slowly grew over the site.
