Networking has always been an important part of being a small business owner. These days, digital resources, like LinkedIn, offer a place to connect virtually. But, the best way to connect with other local businesses is still to join your local chamber of commerce.
A chamber of commerce is a non-profit organization of businesses in a town, city, or region that work together to create a pro-business environment in their community. From lobbying for new laws and regulations, to being involved in local events and expos, a chamber of commerce looks to help give local businesses the resources they need to thrive.
Meaghan Doherty, the director of membership and events at the Plymouth Chamber of Commerce, talked about how the Plymouth Chamber looks to help their members and the community. She described their platform for creating success as, “offering a variety of business networking opportunities” and “sounding a strong voice on local and regional business issues." They also offer educational seminars and special programs to their members.
Doherty shared that the Plymouth Chamber of Commerce has 750 members and says their mission is to provide, “resources for businesses and our communities to experience individual and collective growth through business education; networking, workshops and forums, and legislative advocacy that result in cohesive regional success.”
By building this network of established businesses, it helps create an infrastructure for new ventures to grow. Meaghan goes on to say that a chamber of commerce, focuses on helping new businesses in the area. “No matter what your profession is, you are sure to make new business contacts and expand your company’s visibility through a variety of channels.”
“The Chamber protects and furthers the members’ interests by improving the business climate in the region” says Doherty. Helping to develop a stable and growing local economy builds a better environment for purchasing products and services.
Rob Mellion, the President & CEO of the Fall River Chamber of Commerce, added that a chamber is “a catalyst, and a common vehicle through which business and professional people work together for the common good of our community. A better community means better business and development conditions.”
Although businesses rely on their own marketing and promotional efforts to keep the doors open, being a member of a chamber of commerce can help offer resources and a support system. Joining a chamber of commerce allows you to network with other local businesses and can help you find new ways to reach out and connect with your customers.
