For the next two weeks, millions of people from around the world will turn on their televisions and watch coverage of the 2016 Summer Olympics from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Olympic games strive to bring together the world’s people under the banner of sport to help foster cultural understanding and acceptance. Although, none of the women in this picture were olympic archers when this photo was taken in 1937, the archery team from Bridgewater State Teachers College appears to be prepared to win a few medals.
This year, 11 residents of Massachusetts will be traveling to Rio to represent the U.S. in their respective sports. Some athletes, like Newton gymnast Aly Rasman, have been there before; but for others, like Sherbon’s Eli Dershwitz, a fencer, this will be their first time on the Olympic stage.
