Lately, we have been experiencing the typical New England winter. Maybe, that’s why I’ve been thinking about how much fun a beach vacation can be. During the summer, the beaches of Massachusetts are full of residents and tourists, each person looking for a little rest and relaxation at the water’s edge. From 1884 to 1969, one of the best places to enjoy the surf and sun was the New Ocean House Hotel in Swampscott, Massachusetts.
As the postcard shows, at the height of its popularity the New Ocean House had more than 500 rooms available and offered guests direct access to the beach. When it first opened in 1884, it had 250 rooms and through the years was updated to feature top-of-the-line amenities like an elevator, a telephone, and electric call buttons in each room. For 84 years, the hotel welcomed celebrities like Helen Keller, Babe Ruth, Harpo Marx, and President John F. Kennedy as guests. Sadly, in 1969, the hotel caught fire and was never rebuilt.
Did you or any member of your family work, visit, or stay in the hotel? Do you have pictures or stories to share? We would love to hear them. Please send them to Wicked Local Media Solutions or tweet us @WLMediaSolution.
