As schools across the Commonwealth go back in session for the fall semester, students start to commit to after school activities and athletics. The most popular of these sports is football, and it won’t be long before students are on the field and underneath the Friday night lights. These days you see a lot of athletes wear face paint and getting excited before a game. However, in this 1907 photo of Wayland High School’s football team, the squad looks very relaxed.

In many towns and cities, high school football games are more than just a game. They are social gatherings for old friends. It’s a place where parents can go and ring a cowbell every time their child makes a play. Games offer the marching band and spirit squads a chance to showcase their skills too. Local businesses also use the game to advertise, show their support through sponsorships, and take part in celebrating game day. A high school football game is a true community event.
