Today is the 119th Boston Marathon. It is one of the most famous and notable long distance races in the world. It’s a course that challenges both expert and novice racers. Although you don’t have to leap over obstacles or trudge through mud, the marathon tests you with organic obstacles like Heartbreak Hill and the unpredictable New England weather. If you can battle through the elements, the course, and even your own body, the reward is reaching the finish line successfully.

In a lot of ways running the marathon and running your business are quite similar. Both journeys take planning, commitment and support from people in neighboring communities. It’s only 17 hours old, but the number one trend across the internet has been #TheDress. It is the lead story across many websites and is even being reported on by cable news networks. Colors and how we perceive them have become the water cooler talk of the day.

What’s lost in all of this hoopla over “Why am I seeing white and gold?” is that the dress in question is completely sold out. Not just the blue and black dress, but that dress in all of its color combinations. In fact, the dress has received so much buzz that Roman Originals, the retailer that carries it, have said that they might end up ordering the same dress in white and gold fabric. One picture inspired massive demand. That’s viral marketing.

Recently, residents of Massachusetts have seen a historic amount of snow. New Englanders know these type of storms are going to happen, so we just hunker down and prepare ourselves.

For children in school, a snow day is a surprise day off. For business owners, it doesn’t necessarily bring smiles to faces.

Depending on the severity of the storm, a local business may have to stop or delay its operations. It means sidewalks need to be shoveled, work schedules need to be rearranged, and deliveries need to be cancelled or rescheduled. Business owners and managers need to also be prepared for the day after the storm stops, and open the store as if nothing happened.

But, if your business is slow or you are forced to close for the day due to a snow storm, that doesn’t mean you still can’t cultivate a relationship with your potential or regular customers. This is a time for you to come in from the cold and work on using social media to reach out to customers.
