#TheDress or Viral Marketing Always Wins

Posted by Nick Pizzolato on Fri, Feb 27, 2015 @ 03:12 PM

It’s only 17 hours old, but the number one trend across the internet has been #TheDress. It is the lead story across many websites and is even being reported on by cable news networks. Colors and how we perceive them have become the water cooler talk of the day.

What’s lost in all of this hoopla over “Why am I seeing white and gold?” is that the dress in question is completely sold out. Not just the blue and black dress, but that dress in all of its color combinations. In fact, the dress has received so much buzz that Roman Originals, the retailer that carries it, have said that they might end up ordering the same dress in white and gold fabric. One picture inspired massive demand. That’s viral marketing.

Posted by Nick Pizzolato on Fri, Feb 20, 2015 @ 12:23 PM

Generating sales is more than just having the right products being visible to consumers. It’s also a matter of creating engagement with customers. Every customer wants to feel welcomed to a business. They like to feel that their patronage is wanted and needed.

Advertising and marketing strategies in the 21st century are focused on making consumers feel like they are part of a community. Making this connection through your digital store can be incredibly difficult. After all, you need to still represent your company online, but also offer an easy way for customers to contact and communicate with your enterprise.

Posted by Nick Pizzolato on Tue, Jan 27, 2015 @ 11:54 AM

Learning the Lingo is a series of posts that will investigate marketing terms, ideas and strategies. Our topic today: Newsjacking.

Last week, we were honored to have marketer David Meerman Scott speak at our Wicked Local Media Solutions 2015 Sales Kick-Off.

During the presentation he introduced the idea of “newsjacking.” This is when a company seizes onto a breaking news story or pop culture moment and creates a quick marketing campaign, tying their product into a timely event.

SEM - The Power of Name Recognition Through Web Searches

Posted by Nick Pizzolato on Fri, Jan 23, 2015 @ 02:58 PM

I have a secret. I don’t just write a blog for Wicked Local Media Solutions. I also am the writer and producer of the show “True Detective” on HBO. Go ahead and Google “Nick Pizzolato.” I’ll wait.

See, there I am; author and television producer Nic Pizzolatto.

Okay, okay. I’m not that Nick Pizzolato. But, from time to time I'm asked if I’m him or related to him. Sometimes, people who I have just met come up to me in private and ask if I'm “that” Nic Pizzolatto. It’s always a little deflating when I have to tell them no.

Learning the Lingo: Responsive Web Design

Posted by Nick Pizzolato on Tue, Jan 13, 2015 @ 02:51 PM

I remember visiting my first website in 1996. I was taking a computer skills class and part of the class was teaching students about using email and visiting websites, since both were fairly new.

There was a fair amount of anticipation as the page slowly loaded to show the home page for the now defunct search engine, Alta Vista. Our assignment was to search for and find a website that interested us. Being a fan of “The Simpsons,” I typed in “Fox Television” and visited fox.com. Thanks to the Way Back Machine, you can see what the site looked liked 19 years ago.

I remember being amazed at that website - even though it was mostly just graphics and not that much actual content.

In the News: Instagram has More Active Users than Twitter

Posted by Nick Pizzolato on Fri, Dec 19, 2014 @ 02:08 PM

2014 was supposed to be Twitter’s year.

They reorganized their mobile app display so they could compete with Facebook. They had set up partnerships with FIFA to help promote the World Cup. And they reached 250 million active users (MAU) in the first quarter of 2014’s fiscal year. Twitter was in a position to cement itself as the number two social network.

It’s the end of a long day. You’ve had dinner and are relaxing in your favorite chair, listening to music. All is right with the world. Suddenly, a question that has bothered you for a long time comes to mind.
