Since the first European settlers landed here, life on the water has been second nature to Commonwealth residents. For more than 200 years, our local economy has flourished because of the work done by merchants, fishermen, whalers, and boat builders. There’s a good chance you, or someone you know, has made their living on the deck of a ship. From 1901 to 1986, the Fore River Shipyard was one the region’s leading boat manufacturers.
