When I think of amusement parks, I automatically think of destination vacations in warm weather locations. Admittedly, this is unfair, because in the last two years I’ve celebrated local parks like Edaville Railroad and learned about a popular 19th century amusement park in Hingham. In the 1960s, Massachusetts residents didn’t need to travel to Anaheim, California to find roller coasters, A-list celebrities, or stage shows; they could visit Pleasure Island in Wakefield.

There is nothing more frustrating than being stuck on the side of the road when your car’s tire goes flat. You have someplace to be, and now you have to wait for a tow truck to help you change the tire or bring you to a garage. Imagine how much worse it could be if instead of a car, you were traveling in a horse drawn carriage. Just like modern transportation, their wheels broke and their horses would become incapable of pulling your cart if they broke a shoe. Back then, there was no tow truck, but your garage would’ve been the local blacksmith.

Throwback Thursday: Building the Cape Cod Canal

If you take a quick look at this photo, you may think these workers were digging a highway or a path to lay train tracks. Actually, they are in the early stages of building the Cape Cod Canal. Construction of the canal began in 1909 and six years later it was opened to boats on a limited basis. By 1916, the canal was finished and provided ships a 62 mile shortcut from Boston to New York.
